Finally, after months of trial and errors, problem solving, logistics headaches, sweat and drinking dozens of coconuts, we are getting there with the first bungalow on the island.
We still need to finish, polish and handle all of the interior, but the toughest part of the job is done, and I couldn’t be more excited!
When I look at those pictures, I could see all of the mistakes we’ve done, the imperfections and everything that could be better.
But I decide to see experience, action and growth.
This is the very first time in my life that I am getting anything built, let alone on a remote island in Sulawesi.
To be honest, working with locals is indeed challenging, because we need to align our expectations, our experience, our work ethic.
But working with me is probably equally (or more) challenging, having to deal with me being impatient, perfectionist and changing my mind.
This will never be the best bungalow ever built on an island.
But this is my first one, and the first one always feels very special and unique.
Also, I know it looks like I’m taking credit for this, but I need to recognize that this is only happening thanks to my friend Kamal, who coordinated the whole project so far.
From being a land owner and coconut farmer, he is now learning by doing, helping me handling the building process on the island.
