What I'm Building Now
A short, honest update on the projects I'm working on across Indonesia, and the thread that connects them.
By Thomas Despin
I want this site to be honest about what is real and what is early, so here is a plain update on what I am working on and why these particular things sit together.
Reconnect, still the center
Reconnect Island Resort on Buka Buka Island remains the core of the work. It is operating, and the job now is to keep improving it: the systems, the team, the guest experience, season over season. A resort is never finished, and most of what I have learned about everything else came from running this one.
Kabisu, on Sumba
Kabisu is a villa and hospitality project on Sumba, in development. Sumba is one of the more interesting hospitality opportunities in Indonesia, with strong natural and cultural draw and far less saturation than the established markets. I am taking it forward at the pace the place allows rather than the pace a launch calendar would prefer.
The Island Guy, the filter
A lot of people reach out wanting to build something in Indonesia. Most of those projects are not ready, and some never will be. The Island Guy is how I handle that honestly: a short application that filters for serious projects, then paid strategic calls or done-for-you development for the ones that fit. It lets me give real attention to the people who are actually building, and a straight answer to everyone else.
Tourism information, the quiet infrastructure
I am building a small network of destination information platforms around Sulawesi, the Togean Islands, and Banggai. These regions are underserved online, and good information makes them easier to understand, reach, and visit responsibly. It is slower, quieter work than a resort, and it compounds.
Asasal, early in Banggai
Asasal is an early-stage resort project in Banggai. It is early enough that the honest thing to do is say little and do the groundwork first. I will share more when there is more to share.
hotelbase.ai, the other direction
Running hospitality operations surfaces problems that better software could solve. hotelbase.ai is an early attempt to take some of those problems seriously. There are no features to announce yet. I am noting it here because it points at where my interests go beyond resorts: building useful things, including software, where real operating experience reveals a genuine need.
The thread
Looking at this list, the connection is not the category. It is the approach. Build things that actually run. Stay close to the real work. Be honest about stage. Respect the place and the people. Whether it is a resort, an information platform, or a piece of software, that is the same instinct applied to different problems.
I will keep writing these notes as things move. If you want them when they land, the newsletter is the place.
